Latest research suggests that drinking two or more cola (dark soda) drinks, including diet sodas, each day may double your risk for chronic kidney disease.
The main ingredient in most soda drinks that contributes to kidney dysfunction and stone formation is phosphoric acid. Even sodas without this acid, still contribute to kidney damage due to the presence of fructose- the most prominent sweetener in regular sodas. Colas use either glucose-fructose or high-fructose corn syrup which has been blamed for damaging kidney cells and its role in kidney stone formation.
If you felt that diet sodas are better as they substitute the fructose with artificial aspartame and hence protect you from kidney damage, you are far from the truth. Though not linked directly to artificial sweeteners, studies on regular drinkers (> 2 diet sodas/day) showed a significant decline in their kidneys’ ability to filter wastes from the bloodstream.
